Current Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm Used Price in 2026
As of June 13, 2026, the median used Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm price across 13 active listings from 5 sources is $2,603, with a range of $2,599–$11,737. The cheapest active listing right now is $2,599 (eBay US).
The Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH is the only zoom Leica ever produced for the medium-format S system. Equivalent to roughly 24-72mm in 35mm-format terms, it's the S-system's standard-range zoom, covering wide-normal through short-telephoto in a single lens for S2, S (Typ 006), and S (Typ 007) bodies. The S system launched in 2008 with the S2; the S body itself was discontinued in 2018, so the Vario-Elmar-S is no longer in current production. Used market is small and specialty: buyers are almost exclusively existing S system owners. For the broader Leica zoom landscape see Leica Zoom Lenses: A Complete Guide by Mount and Era.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this lens compatible with non-Leica medium-format bodies?
No. The Leica S system uses a proprietary S bayonet that Leica did not license to any other body manufacturer. The Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm only mounts on Leica S bodies (S2, S, S Typ 006, S Typ 007, S3). It cannot be adapted to Hasselblad H, Phase One XF, Fujifilm GFX, or Pentax 645 bodies; the flange-focal-distance differs and there is no commercial adapter that bridges the difference.
How does S-system 30-90mm compare to 35mm-format zooms?
The S system uses a 30×45mm "medium-format-light" sensor (larger than full-frame 36×24mm but smaller than traditional 6×4.5cm film medium format). The crop factor relative to 35mm is approximately 0.8×, so the 30-90mm focal-length range gives roughly 24-72mm field-of-view equivalent in 35mm terms. The lens performs the same role on the S body that a 24-70mm zoom performs on a full-frame DSLR or mirrorless body: standard walk-around range covering wide-normal through short telephoto.
Should I buy this lens if I don't already own a Leica S body?
No. The S system has been discontinued since 2018, current-production S3 bodies are very expensive when found, and used S2 / S Typ 006 / S Typ 007 bodies cost $4,000–$15,000+ themselves. If you're not already invested in the S system, the Vario-Elmar-S has no use to you. For medium-format shooting, current production options from Fujifilm (GFX) and Hasselblad (X-series) offer modern sensors and substantial native lens lineups at comparable or lower total cost.
