In our earlier post on the R-mount trinity we covered the 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm R lenses, along with the case for buying into the R system as a way to access Leica optics at roughly half the price of equivalent M-mount glass. That case gets even stronger once you go past 50mm. The R-mount catalog from 90mm upward is where Leica's SLR system produced some of its best optics, and where the discount versus M-mount equivalents widens further, often by a factor of two or three.
The reasons are mechanical. An SLR design has practical advantages over a rangefinder for telephoto work: the photographer sees what the lens sees (no rangefinder triangulation accuracy problem at long focal lengths), focus can be confirmed at the focusing screen, and the longer back-focus distance the SLR mount permits gives optical engineers more freedom for telephoto designs. Leica took those advantages seriously. The R-mount 180mm primes in particular are among the most-respected telephoto designs from any manufacturer.
This post walks through the R-mount catalog from 80mm to 800mm: what each focal length offers, which versions are worth chasing, and what current used prices look like. The longer you go, the more interesting the R-mount value proposition gets.
Three different focal lengths cluster in the portrait-length range in R-mount, and all three are worth knowing about.
Summilux-R 80mm f/1.4: the fast portrait specialist. The Summilux-R 80mm is one of the most distinctive lenses Leica has ever made: a fast f/1.4 telephoto for an SLR mount, weighing in at 700g, with an extremely shallow depth of field at wide apertures that produces the kind of subject isolation that no M-mount lens at this focal length approaches. Eight elements in five groups, made from 1980 through 2009 with only minor variations. As of May 2026 we track 44 active Summilux-R 80mm listings typically asking in the $1,500–$2,500 range. The cinema community has been quietly buying these for years for rehoused use, and the look is exceptional.
Summicron-R 90mm f/2: the workhorse portrait lens. Multiple versions across 1964–2009. The first version (Wetzlar, 1964–1976) has a reputation among collectors for a particularly pleasing rendering character; the later versions are sharper but slightly more "modern" in look. As of May 2026 we track 92 active Summicron-R 90mm listings typically asking around $673. The M-mount equivalent (Summicron-M 90mm) runs around $1,047, so the R version is roughly two-thirds the price for the same focal length and aperture.
Elmarit-R 90mm f/2.8: the value choice. A stop slower than the Summicron-R, lighter and more compact, substantially cheaper. As of May 2026 we track 80 active Elmarit-R 90mm listings typically asking around $440. At that price the Elmarit-R 90mm is one of the most accessible Leica portrait lenses you can buy in any mount. For shooters who don't need the Summicron's extra stop, this is the answer.
APO-Summicron-R 90mm f/2 ASPH: the modern flagship. Produced 2002–2009 as Leica's optical pinnacle at 90mm, with apochromatic correction and an aspherical element. Significantly rarer than the standard Summicron-R 90mm and trades at a meaningful premium. As of May 2026 we track 8 active APO-Summicron-R 90mm listings typically asking around $3,317, roughly 5x the price of the standard Summicron-R 90mm. If you want the best 90mm R lens ever made and supply is no constraint, this is it. For most shooters the regular Summicron-R 90mm produces files that are practically indistinguishable from the APO version.
The Apo-Macro-Elmarit-R 100mm f/2.8 is the standout macro lens of the entire Leica catalog. Produced 1987 through 2009, the lens focuses from infinity down to 1:2 reproduction ratio (1:1 with an accessory tube), produces edge-to-edge sharpness from f/2.8, and has the kind of optical character that makes professional product and food photographers seek it out years after the SLR system itself was discontinued.
This is genuinely one of the best macro lenses any manufacturer has ever produced. Side-by-side comparisons against the contemporary Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro and the Zeiss Makro-Planar 100mm f/2 consistently favor the Leica for color rendering and out-of-focus quality, though the Leica is purely manual focus.
As of May 2026 we track 60 active APO-Macro-Elmarit-R 100mm listings typically asking around $1,189. There is no M-mount equivalent. The closest M-mount macro option is the Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4, which is a fundamentally different lens with much shorter close-focus range. If you want a true 1:2-or-better macro on a Leica body, the APO-Macro-Elmarit-R 100mm adapted to an SL is the path.
The Elmarit-R 135mm f/2.8 is the lens many R shooters reach for first when they want a working telephoto. Multiple versions across 1965–2009. Optically excellent, with the relatively long minimum focus distance typical of vintage 135mm SLR lenses (around 1.5m). Light enough to hand-hold easily, sharp from f/2.8, and currently one of the most affordable Leica telephotos you can buy.
As of May 2026 we track 102 active Elmarit-R 135mm listings typically asking around $319. For comparison, the older Hektor 135mm (covered in our earlier post) typically sells at around $159 but is f/4.5 and a much older optical design. The Elmarit-R 135mm at $319 is meaningfully better glass and still very affordable.
There is no Summicron-R 135mm. At this focal length the choice is the Elmarit-R or the much-larger 180mm options.
If the R-mount system has a signature focal length, it's 180mm. Leica produced multiple 180mm primes across the R lineup, and several of them are among the most-praised SLR telephotos ever made.
Elmarit-R 180mm f/2.8: the standard. Multiple versions across 1968–1998. The classic R 180mm telephoto: 750g, fast for a 180mm prime (the contemporary Nikon and Canon 180mm primes were f/2.8 to f/3.5), excellent build quality, and a reputation as one of the sharper 180mm SLR lenses of the period. As of May 2026 we track 87 active Elmarit-R 180mm listings typically asking around $405. At that price the Elmarit-R 180mm is the cheapest practical way to put fast 180mm Leica glass on any body.
APO-Telyt-R 180mm f/3.4: the Mandler-designed cult classic. Produced 1975–1998. Originally developed during the period when Mandler was also designing high-resolution lenses for NATO and North American intelligence clients from Leitz Canada, the f/3.4 APO-Telyt is one of the most-praised optical designs in Leica's entire production history. Leica deliberately chose the slower f/3.4 maximum aperture (rather than f/2.8) because the simpler optical formula allowed apochromatic correction at a time when no other manufacturer was making apo-corrected 180mm SLR primes. The result is a lens with stunning color rendering, edge-to-edge sharpness from wide open, and a much lighter package than the f/2.8 Elmarit-R (the f/3.4 APO weighs about 750g). Astronomers and military photographers prized it for its low chromatic aberration on point light sources. As of May 2026 we track 43 active APO-Telyt-R 180mm f/3.4 listings typically asking around $699. For the optical quality, this is one of the most dramatically underpriced lenses in the entire Leica catalog.
APO-Elmarit-R 180mm f/2.8: the fast successor to the standard Elmarit-R. Introduced 1998 with apochromatic correction, refined optical formula, and noticeably better corner sharpness and color rendering than the non-APO Elmarit-R 180mm. Heavier (1100g), more expensive, but the optical improvement is substantial. As of May 2026 we track 22 active APO-Elmarit-R 180mm listings typically asking around $2,560. Roughly 6x the price of the standard Elmarit-R 180mm and a stop faster than the APO-Telyt 3.4.
APO-Summicron-R 180mm f/2: the legend. Produced 1994–2005, this is the holy-grail R-mount telephoto. f/2 at 180mm in an SLR mount is enormous: the lens weighs 2,500g, requires a tripod for serious use, and was originally priced around $10,000 new. The optical quality is universally praised as among the best 180mm primes any manufacturer has ever made. As of May 2026 we track 13 active APO-Summicron-R 180mm listings typically asking around $6,986. They come up rarely and clean examples hold value indefinitely.
Elmar-R 180mm f/4: the compact option. A simpler, slower, much lighter 180mm, small enough to throw in a bag without much penalty. Useful for shooters who want a 180mm telephoto in a package they can actually carry around all day. Not as optically distinguished as the Elmarits or the APO-Telyt 3.4, but at much lower weight and bulk. As of May 2026 we track 52 active Elmar-R 180mm listings typically asking around $290, the cheapest 180mm Leica in the R lineup by a wide margin.
Past 180mm the R-mount catalog gets into specialist territory: long telephotos for wildlife, sports, distant subjects. These lenses are large, expensive when bought new, and almost never used by the typical photographer, but for shooters who specifically want long Leica glass, the options exist.
One R-mount oddity worth mentioning is the APO-Telyt-R 280mm/400mm/560mm Module System, a Leica engineering achievement where a single optical module (head) attaches to interchangeable focusing units to become a different telephoto. Buy the head and the 280mm focusing unit, you have a 280mm f/2.8. Add the 400mm focusing unit, you have a 400mm f/4. Add the 560mm unit, you have a 560mm f/5.6. The system was sold this way to wildlife and sports professionals who needed multiple long focal lengths but didn't want to carry three separate lenses. Complete module systems trade on the used market for $20,000-plus; partial sets and individual focusing units appear occasionally at lower prices.
Leica produced two teleconverters (Leica calls them "extenders") specifically for the R-mount lens lineup, and they're worth understanding because they multiply the practical reach of the system without adding new lenses.
The practical implication for telephoto shooters: the APO-Telyt-R 180mm f/3.4 with the matched APO-Extender-R 2x gives you 360mm f/6.8 in a small, light package for roughly the price of a single Elmarit-M 90mm, assuming you find a clean 2x APO converter, which is the harder of the two to source on the used market.
Same options as we covered in the trinity post: Leica R-to-L adapter for SL bodies, third-party adapters for Sony E-mount, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and other current systems. For long telephoto work specifically, the adapted setup has some advantages: the SL bodies have excellent in-body image stabilization that the original R bodies didn't, focus peaking on EVF helps with critical manual focus at long focal lengths, and the longer the lens the less you notice the slight bulk an adapter adds.
The R-bodies-themselves option (also covered in the trinity post) is also viable for telephoto work: an R8 or R9 with an Elmarit-R 180mm is a complete working long-lens kit for under $1,500.
